Rivalry week is always one of the most exciting points in the college football season. Teams continue their sometimes 100+ year series for a coveted rivalry trophy. This year’s Iron Bowl between No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Auburn has so much more on the line than the Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Award. The 82nd Iron Bowl will determine which team will go on to play for the SEC Championship. The game will take place Saturday and 3:30 P.M. EST at Auburn.
This game has the makings of a classic and will decide who wins the SEC West and the privilege to take on Georgia. Alabama leads the all-time series 45-35-1 and have won five of the last six meetings. This is only the second time in history that the rivalry will determine the SEC West Champion. The last time was in 2013 when Auburn’s Chris Davis returned a field goal 109 yards as time expired to win the game and the SEC West. The infamous play was dubbed the “Kick Six.”
While Friday’s Iron Bowl may not have as dramatic of an ending, it has all the makings of an incredible game. The Alabama defense has been outstanding all season but will face an Auburn offense that averages 37.6 points per game. After a rough start to the season, Tiger’s head coach, Gus Malzahn, has kept his team positive and in position to compete for a playoff spot. Alabama is fighting to become the only team to appear in every College Football Playoff. They will have to rely on the selection committee if they cannot muster an SEC title.
